Autumn’s done come. And so here is our headphones guy on a walk, sountracked by Jules Gray. Mmm.

Autumn. Or Fall if you're from somewhere that calls it that. Keats called it the season of mellow fruitfulness, and that's certainly a nice way to think of Autumn. The harvest coming in. The beautiful ripened fruit. And then there's the amazing colour bomb created by the leaves turning from green to pretty much every colour that isn't green. Well, all the so-called Autumnal shades, anyway. Those leaves are dying of course, but we try not to think too much about that, because in truth, Autumn is a melancholy season. Summer's been and gone. The days are getting shorter. And colder. It's no surprise then that much of this music captures these feelings. There are a lot of musical sighs going on here. Many of these songs are so autumnal that they even namecheck the season in the title. Others are subtler, and reference the season in the lyric, sometimes just in passing. The Autumn Stone by Small Faces doesn't mention Autumn at all apart from in the title, yet the vibe of the record is saturated with the feeling that title bestows on the song. And apparently there's an unwritten law that says any such playlist has to include Justin Hayward singing Forever Autumn. Once upon a time I would have broken this law, but like Autumn itself, I've mellowed. It's a lovely tune, after all. So put on your favourite sweater, and dig in. Led Zep and The White Stripes will be along at some point to make sure you haven't dropped off (the end of your branch).
